BACKPACKING CHECKLIST

Following is a list of items that you should consider taking when you make that trip into the back country. The things you take will depend on the duration of your trip, the things you plan to do, and the conditions you expect to encounter. Keep in mind that you will have to rely on your own resources. There is no 911 out there.

Remember - you have to carry everything you bring. Think weight! When backpacking, be prepared for any weather conditions - it can snow in July in the mountains.

HIKING CAMP EQUIPMENT LIST

Following is a list of suggested personal equipment. Remember that camp is at a high elevation and ANY weather conditions can be expected. While you should be prepared for all eventualities, please remember to limit your gear to 50 lbs. maximum (couples should aim for 40 lbs each).

CLOTHING

- warm (wool) pants - sun hat
- heavy sweater - bathing suit
- rain gear (poncho/pants/gaiters) - T-shirts
- sturdy hiking boots - shirts
- light boots/runners for around camp - pullover
- light (polypropylene) socks - heavy (wool) socks
- underwear - pants
- long-johns - down-filled jacket
- gloves - toque
- change of clothes for trip home - light jacket

CAMP GEAR

- sturdy tent (with waterproof fly) - warm sleeping bag
- air mattress or foamy - pillow
- mess kit (dishes/cutlery) - net bag to hold dishes
- tent repair kit - solar shower
- toilet kit (biodegradable soap, towel, toothbrush, etc.) - ground sheet
- books - flashlight
- extra batteries - your favourite game
- booze (no beer or pop, use plastic bottle for hard liquor)
- lunch for trip in - extra fruit
- gorp (dried fruit, nuts, candy) - baking (2 doz. cookies)
- sewing kit - extra cord for gaiters

HIKING GEAR

- waterproof matches, wax candle - day pack
- sun block - compass
- emergency food (for at least one day) - toilet paper
- camera (extra film) - ice axe
- survival blanket or bivvy sack - contour maps (1:50,000)
- water bottle - lemonade crystals
- iodine tablets or water filter - binoculars
- insect repellant - altimeter
- pocket knife and/or bush saw - sun glasses
- unbreakable mirror (for signalling) - moleskin (for blisters)
- metal container (store survival items and for use as a cook pot) - whistle (to attract help)
- first aid kit (including sufficient personal supplies)
- special medications or antidotes that you may require (There are no drugs in the camp first aid kit)
