Climbing Trip Ratings

Climbing trips are rated with a combination of YDS and the European alpine grade.
YDS:

1 - walking on a trail
2 - walking off trail; very occasional use of hands
3 - scrambling on rock; occasional to frequent use of hands; generally no rope is used
4 - climbing on steep terrain; requires use of hands and basic climbing skills; most parties will use a rope
5 - technical climbing; requires moves and techniques that a novice would not possess; most parties will use a rope, have fail-safe belays, and place protection between belays; an open-ended scale of increasing difficulty: 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, etc.

European Alpine:

F - "easy" (facile); An easy climb with little technical difficulty; class 3-4 rock and/or easy travel on snow/glacier up to 40°
PD - "a little difficult" (peu difficile); rock climbing up to YDS 5.3-5.4; snow up to 45°; may require exposed climbing on rock and/or snow.
AD - "fairly difficult" (assez difficile); short sections of rock up to YDS 5.6-5.7; steep snow and ice; route finding, escape, and descent are more challenging; ascent route is usually reasonable to descend.
